Fitting three kids’ hockey bags, a stroller, and seven seatbelts into one SUV is the real test for a growing Ontario family. The 2026 Volvo XC90 is built around that exact problem, but Core, Plus, and Ultra solve it in different ways. Before you decide, it helps to know which trim protects the third row you’ll actually use every weekend, not just the one that looks good in the driveway.
The 2026 XC90 lineup keeps things simple: Core, Plus, and Ultra. Each is offered with a choice of two powertrains, the B6 AWD mild hybrid and the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid, and each seats up to seven people across three rows.
Cargo space behind the third row lands at 653 L on the B6 and 650 L on the T8, enough for a couple of duffel bags and a cooler with all seven seats filled. Fold the third row and that grows to 980 L (B6) or 977 L (T8); fold the second row too and it opens up to 1,950 L or 1,941 L.
Closed underfloor compartments add another 16 L on the B6 or 13 L on the T8 for gear you’d rather keep out of sight.
Core is the entry point, and it doesn’t skimp on the basics a family needs. The panoramic roof, wireless phone charging, Pilot Assist, four-zone climate control, and third-row air conditioning are all standard, and the seven-seat layout is included rather than optional. Families who mainly need dependable third-row seating and core safety tech, without chasing every extra, will find Core covers what matters.
Skip it if tight parking lots and loading a squirming toddler into row three make a 360-degree camera and side park assist feel necessary, since Core offers neither.
Plus answers that exact gap. It adds the 360-degree camera and park assist on the front, rear, and sides, which matters most when threading the XC90 into a school pickup line or a packed lot. Plus is also the first trim to offer the integrated booster cushion for the third row, a genuine help for parents fitting smaller kids into the back without hauling a separate seat.
Twenty-one-inch wheels come standard here rather than the base 20-inch fitment on Core. For families who load and unload kids constantly, Plus is where the third row gets easier to live with day to day.
Ultra shifts the focus from function to comfort. Ventilated Nappa leather replaces the quilted Nordico upholstery, front seat ventilation and a power passenger seat with memory become standard, and a head-up display is exclusive to this trim. The trade-off worth knowing: the seven-seat configuration that’s standard on Core and Plus becomes optional on Ultra, alongside an optional six-seat layout.
A family that wants three rows should confirm that configuration when ordering rather than assume it’s included. Ultra suits families who want the third-row flexibility of the XC90 wrapped in a more upscale cabin, not those simply trying to secure a seven-seat layout at the lowest cost.
Both powertrains are offered across Core, Plus, and Ultra, so the seven-seat decision above and the engine decision here are separate choices. The B6 AWD mild hybrid uses a 1.969 L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, with fuel economy rated at 10.4 L/100km combined.
The T8 AWD plug-in hybrid pairs that same 1.969 L engine, here making 312 hp on its own, with a 143-hp electric motor for a combined 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque. That’s a quicker, more relaxed highway merge with a full third row loaded, and the T8 posts a 0-100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds against 6.7 seconds for the B6.
The T8’s 18.8-kWh battery, 14.7 kWh of it usable, delivers up to 53 km of electric range, enough to cover most short commutes and weekend town trips on electricity alone, and it recharges in about 5 hours on a Level 2 charger. Combined fuel economy for the T8 comes in at 8.9 L/100km, noticeably lower than the B6.

If your priority is simply getting seven belted seats at the most accessible entry point, Core delivers that along with the safety and climate features every row needs. It’s the right call for families who value the third row itself more than the tech surrounding it.
Plus earns its keep for families running the daily circuit of school runs, sports practices, and grocery trips, where the 360-degree camera and side park assist take the stress out of tight spaces. The optional booster cushion also means one less item to pack for a child transitioning out of a car seat.
Ultra is built for families who want the third-row flexibility of the XC90 without giving up a genuinely upscale cabin, but remember to specify the seven-seat configuration since it’s optional here rather than standard.
The 2026 XC90 gives Ontario families three distinct paths to the same seven-seat layout, from Core’s straightforward essentials to Ultra’s upscale cabin, with the B6 and T8 powertrains adding a second layer of choice for daily driving.
Visit Volvo Cars Toronto to sit in all three rows, compare cargo space with the seats folded, and confirm which trim and powertrain combination keeps your family’s seven-seat needs covered.
