The XC90, the flagship SUV of Volvo, brings together the best of Volvo design. Advanced technology, robust powertrains, and more complement the thoughtful Scandinavian craftsmanship. The competition in the segment is busy with several rivals, but we are proud to compare the XC90 to any model. Here, we line it up against the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 focuses on fuel efficiency
Each powertrain bears an impressive design and function. The Momentum trim features the T5 engine with 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This all-gas system earns an impressive fuel consumption rating of 11.2 L/100 km in the city and 8.3 L/100 km on the highway, which is the best gas only rating for the XC90.
The AWD turbocharged T6 is available in all XC90 trims and features 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The XC90’s T8 Twin Engine is available with all seven-seat XC90 models and features a net 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. This PHEV also creates one of the most efficient SUVs in its class with a fuel consumption rating of 9.1/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway).
The 2021 Volvo XC90 increases value
The standard Mercedes-Benz GLE offers two petrol-only engines. The GLE 350 4MATIC includes a turbocharged four-cylinder with 255 horsepower. The GLE 450 upgrades to a turbocharged six-cylinder that reaches 362 horsepower. However, there's a catch. Compared to the XC90's T5-equipped models, the GLE 350 achieves slightly more horsepower, but its fuel consumption is higher with 12.4 L/100 km in the city and 9.0 L/100 km on the highway.
The GLE also has an AMG lineup that costs more than double the price of the XC90. This essentially creates a new class of vehicles.
The XC90 also creates advantages in versatility. The interior of the XC90 is spacious, with over 300 litres of additional cargo volume than the GLE when the middle row is folded. When you have a full load of family and friends, plenty of space remains for extras.
