Fall commutes mean wet leaves, early darkness and a lot of stop-and-go. That is a good time to sort a compact luxury SUV shortlist by what you will actually use every day.
The 2026 Volvo XC40 makes a handy checklist for that job. Run each priority below against it, and the right trim usually becomes obvious.

Four trims make up the lineup: Core, Plus, Ultra and Black Edition Ultra. These are the features that separate them.

Every trim seats five, and every trim has heated front seats and a power tailgate with hands-free keyless entry.
The B5 powertrain is a turbocharged 2.0 L four-cylinder with 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. It reaches 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. That is brisk for a compact SUV, and the mild-hybrid assist helps it stay light on fuel at 9.1 L/100 km combined (10.1 city, 7.8 highway). It runs on premium fuel.
All-wheel drive is listed on Core, Plus and Ultra, and Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control are listed on all four trims. Ground clearance of 205 mm helps on gravel roads and rutted laneways. The 11.4 m turning circle keeps tight parking lots easy.
The safety basics are shared. Adaptive cruise control, BLIS with Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keeping Aid, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, Rear Collision Warning and a slippery road alert are listed on every trim. Rain and low light are the norm this time of year, so that baseline matters.
The real divide is Pilot Assist, which is listed from Ultra up. It supports you in steady commuter traffic, so long daily drives are the reason to start your shortlist at Ultra.
Cameras step up at Plus, which adds the 360° camera and front, rear and side park assist. Core has rear and front park assist and a rear camera instead.
The screens are the same on every trim: a 9-inch centre display and a 12.3-inch driver display. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless phone charging, and Google Assistant, Google Maps and the Google Play Store are listed throughout, along with the Volvo Cars app.
Sound is where the trims separate. Core and Plus carry the High Performance audio system. Harman Kardon Premium Sound is optional on Plus and listed on Ultra and Black Edition Ultra, along with an air-ventilated subwoofer.
Comfort follows a similar pattern. Heated front seats are on every trim. Ultra and Black Edition Ultra add a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats for colder mornings, while Core and Plus offer both as options.
Core uses premium textile upholstery with leather optional. Plus and Ultra offer Connect Suede textile/Microtech with leather as an option, and Black Edition Ultra uses Charcoal Connect Suede textile/Microtech. Plus and above also move to higher-level cabin illumination, while Core offers it as an option.
Behind the rear seats you get 443 L, and maximum volume with the seats folded reaches 1,432 L. The liftover height is 755 mm, so loading bags and strollers is a modest lift.
The power tailgate is on every trim. What differs is the organizing gear: the foldable load floor with cargo divider and grocery bag holder, plus the trunk power outlet, arrive at Plus. If weekly shopping runs and school gear fill the back, that step up earns its place.

Core suits a shopper who wants the turbo performance, AWD and full set of core safety aids at the entry point. Plus is the sensible pivot for families: the 360° camera, a panoramic roof, the load floor and the trunk outlet all show up here.
Ultra fits long-distance commuters, with Pilot Assist, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. Black Edition Ultra adds its own styling, with black grille details, colour-coordinated mirror caps and 20-inch black edition wheels.
The XC40 pairs 247 hp, standard-setting safety aids on every trim and a clear trim ladder that tells you exactly what each step adds. It is the compact luxury SUV that answers a practical checklist.
