Most commutes are shorter than drivers think, and that gap between how far you actually drive and how far you assume you drive is exactly where a plug-in hybrid earns its keep. The 2026 Volvo XC60 T8 is built around that gap.
For Ontario drivers weighing a full EV against something more familiar, the T8 offers a middle path: electric power for the daily grind, a gasoline engine standing by for everything else.
The XC60 T8 is rated for 58 km of electric-only driving. For a lot of Ontario commuters, that number covers the round trip to work, a stop for groceries, and the school pickup, all without touching the gas engine.
That electric-first portion matters most for drivers who want to cut fuel use without giving up the flexibility of a gas engine for longer trips. Stop-and-go traffic actually works in the T8’s favour in electric mode, since the electric motor doesn’t waste energy idling the way a combustion engine does. Cold weather, hard acceleration, and highway speeds will all pull that 58 km figure down in real-world driving, the same way any electric range estimate shifts with conditions.
The T8 pairs a 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, rated at 312 hp, with an electric motor rated at 143 hp, for a combined output of 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque. The 18.8 kWh battery (14.7 kWh usable) feeds the electric motor.
Drivers can select Pure mode to run electric-only when the battery has charge, or let the hybrid system blend the engine and motor automatically. Once the battery depletes, or the driver demands more power than the electric motor alone can deliver, the gas engine takes over seamlessly in hybrid mode.
AWD is standard on the T8, and ground clearance sits at 200 mm. Together, those two specs mean the electric-first commute doesn’t disappear once winter weather shows up in Ontario.

The T8’s usable range is designed around overnight home charging, not public fast-charging stops. Plugging in at home each night keeps the battery topped up for the next day’s 58 km of electric-only driving, turning the commute into a repeatable routine rather than something to plan around.
Workplace or public charging can extend electric-only range on days with extra errands, but it’s a backup, not a requirement. How often the vehicle actually charges determines how much of the week stays electric versus how often the gas engine steps in.
Some days will push the XC60 T8 past its electric range regardless of charging habits: longer highway stretches, multiple stops strung together, or any day the vehicle simply doesn’t get plugged in. On those days, the hybrid system takes over and the T8 drives like a conventional hybrid, drawing on both the engine and motor as needed.
The T8 suits drivers whose weekday routine fits inside that 58 km window: a commute into the city, errands nearby, a repeatable loop that resets every night on the charger. For those drivers, most weekly driving can happen without burning gas at all.
Drivers who regularly split their time between short local trips and longer weekend or highway drives get a different benefit: no separate vehicle needed for each scenario. The gas engine removes the range anxiety that comes with a full EV, while the electric motor still handles the routine miles.
Inside, the cabin is built for repeated daily use. Heated front seats come standard, and the cargo area holds 598 L behind the rear seats, enough for work bags, a stroller, or a week of groceries. For condo and urban parking, the T8’s 21.2-degree approach angle and turning circle make tighter manoeuvres more manageable than a larger SUV.
Compared to a gas-only XC60 B5, the daily difference shows up mainly in refuelling frequency and driving feel: the T8 owner plugs in far more often and fills up far less, while the B5 owner sticks to a simpler routine of gas stops alone. Neither approach is wrong, but they suit different daily patterns.
The XC60 T8 pairs a 58 km electric range with AWD and a gas engine backup, giving drivers a way to handle most short trips electrically while keeping the flexibility for longer drives. Charging habits, not just the powertrain spec, determine how much of that promise gets used day to day.
