What Volvo Changed on the New 2028 XC40, From the Outside In

The Volvo XC40 is getting its biggest round of updates in years, and for Ontario shoppers the changes show up in three places: how it looks, how you talk to it, and how much it notices around you.

Here is what is confirmed for the 2028 XC40, from the new face to the new sensors.

The Biggest Changes to the 2028 XC40

The front end is where you will spot the difference first. The Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights get a new design, a refined take on the light signature Volvo is known for. An upgraded grille and a redesigned front bumper, hood and front wings finish the new look.

The rear gets the same attention. New LED rear lights, an upgraded tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper give the back of the XC40 a fresh look from the road behind.

Wheels are new too. The XC40 comes with diamond cut designs in 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch sizes, so the largest option adds presence without a different body.

Inside: Screen, Gemini and Materials

The centre screen grows to 11.2 inches and runs Volvo’s latest user experience. Fewer taps are needed to reach key functions, which matters most on a busy commute when you want one quick action, not a menu hunt.

Google Gemini brings natural conversation to the cabin. You can plan a journey, find a good stop along the way, and manage messages hands-free in everyday language. Gemini can also translate a message before you send it and answer questions about a destination. Availability of connected features can differ between markets.

The materials are new as well. For the first time, XC40 buyers can choose Arianne Cardamom leather upholstery with Brown Ash wood decor across the interior. Black Ash and aluminium decor are also offered, and the cabin gets refined illumination.

Safety: A New Sensor Platform

The largest change is the one you cannot see. A new software and sensor platform adds front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras. The result is a wider view of the area around the car.

That platform backs the collision-warning systems. If a collision looks likely, the XC40 can warn you or step in, using automatic emergency steering or automatic emergency braking.

  • Door Opening Alert: warns occupants before a door swings into passing cyclists or other road users.
  • Optional Pilot Assist: now adds lane change assist and follows the road more smoothly on longer drives.
  • Optional 3D camera: the 360 view is upgraded to 3D to make parking and low-speed manoeuvres easier.

What Stays the Same

The XC40 keeps its identity. The headlights are a refined take on the iconic Volvo light signature, and the new bodywork continues the brand’s Scandinavian design language rather than starting over.

The cabin keeps its focus on everyday usability, with smart storage and a wireless phone charger, now updated. Pilot Assist and the surround-view camera stay optional, so you add them only if you want them.

Safety also remains the XC40’s foundation. The new hardware builds on the same research-driven approach to preventing collisions and protecting people.

What These Changes Mean for You

If you drive in Ontario traffic every day, the sensor upgrade is the story. Radars at the corners, new parking cameras and Door Opening Alert all target the moments that cause stress: tight lots, lane changes and curbside doors.

If you spend your commute on the phone or in navigation menus, the larger screen and Gemini cut the effort. Spoken requests replace tapping, and fewer taps are needed for what remains.

If you care about how a cabin feels, the Arianne Cardamom leather with Brown Ash decor is a first for the XC40. The Black Ash and aluminium choices suit a cooler, more modern taste.

And if curb appeal matters, the new lights, grille, bumpers and 20-inch wheels make this the sharpest-looking XC40 yet.

The 2028 XC40 Is Ready for a Closer Look

The refreshed XC40 brings a new face, an 11.2-inch screen with Google Gemini, richer cabin choices and a sensor platform that widens what the car can see. It keeps the Volvo identity while sharpening everything you touch and rely on.
